Maria Barraza has been inspired by fabrics since the age of 3, when her mother, a fashion designer, took her into a store to buy fabric for a new coat. After honing her skills in merchandise management, product development and design, Ms. Barraza founded Barraza Associates, a full-service private label company serving the nation’s top chain specialty stores and catalogs including Nordstrom and SAKS, among others. In 2003, Ms. Barraza opened an upscale retail boutique in Stonington, CT. She has dressed then-second lady Tipper Gore, CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien, and Elizabeth Vargas of ABC’s 20/20. Ms. Barraza also serves as Director of theBROOKLYNfashionincubator at Berkeley College, a program spearheaded by Macy’s that supports up-and-coming fashion entrepreneurs.
