Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

Syleecia Thompson, DBA, Professor, Management, Berkeley College Larry L. Luing School of Business®, was invited to attend The White House’s first ever United State of Women Summit, held on June 14 and 15, 2016, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

“While attending the United State of Women Summit, I learned that there are a plethora of women working to improve the quality of life for girls and women, and that we have a lot of work left to accomplish,” said Dr. Thompson.

President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. first lady Michelle Obama, media proprietor Oprah Winfrey, and business mogul Warren Buffett were among the influential figures who addressed the audience at the United State of Women Summit. Dr. Thompson was particularly moved by Mr. Buffet’s call to entrepreneurs to strive to “delight our customer,” as well as by Mrs. Obama’s encouragement to never give up or be complacent.

During the two-day conference, Dr. Thompson attended sessions touching upon a range of topics, including economic empowerment for women and families, gender diversity across all industries and sectors, and opportunities for women in non-traditional careers and technical education fields. She plans to implement what she learned during the conference into the relevant classes she teaches at Berkeley College, including Principles of Management, Human Resource Management, Business Ethics and Organizational Behavior.

“As someone who cares deeply about gender equality and women’s issues, this was one of the most exhilarating times in my life,” said Dr. Thompson.

In 2015, she co-founded The Survivor Movement, an organization dedicating to providing women who are overcoming adversity with tools and resources to feel empowered and encouraged to live life with a purpose. Dr. Thompson is writing a book about the struggles she and other women experienced after suffering from a miscarriage or stillbirth, while also co-running the health and fitness network Health Is Wealth with Dr. Ivan Hernandez.
