THE GALLERY AT WOODLAND PARK SHOWCASES
See caption below.
Berkeley College hosted the opening of the Graphic Design Alumni Exhibit - an evening of art, music and celebration - at The Gallery at Woodland Park on November 10, 2017. The exhibit showcases the exemplary work of more than 20 alumni who graduated from Berkeley College with a degree in Graphic Design. The work on exhibition represents web design, identity design, 3-D design and more.
“I continue to be impressed by the work and artistry of our alumni. I see it as world-class,” said Carlos Cruz, Chair, Graphic Design, School of Professional Studies, Berkeley College, when he welcomed the audience.
The innovative and comprehensive Graphic Design program at Berkeley College exposes students to the problem-solving process using a broad range of traditional, digital and emerging media. Courses are taught in modern studio/lab environments that encourage entrepreneurial teamwork and collaboration. Portfolios, internships and capstone projects are completed prior to graduation as students work closely with Career Services to secure future employment.
The Gallery, which comprises 1,800 square feet of exhibit and presentation space, is part of a design center created for Berkeley College students and alumni to exhibit their work in a professional setting. The Gallery exhibit will be on display through December 8, 2017, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Among those who showcased work at the exhibit was Berkeley College alumnus James Vanegas of North Bergen, NJ, who had set his sights on becoming a designer since high school. “I’m glad to have had reliable mentors in the industry help me with my chosen career as a designer, which I had started at the age of 17, working out of my home,” he said. “I founded my own design and marketing company – Aparance – and am pleased we’ve grown to be a full-service creative digital agency.”
Taylor Jones of Hillcrest, NY, graduated from Berkeley College with a BFA in Graphic Design and an AAS in Interior Design. Before graduating and starting her own business, she gained experience through three internships that included graphic design at 3B international in Totowa, NJ, web and marketing support at Dingman’s Dairy in Paterson, NJ, and as an assistant at Gina Avino Artistic Design in Ramsey, NJ. “Berkeley College gave me the experience and knowledge to start a successful career,” said Ms. Jones. “Thanks to Berkeley, I got my first award as a graphic designer.”
Alumna Sherry Wu of Clifton, NJ, is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and prior to her enrollment at Berkeley College she served as a divisional photographer aboard U.S. naval vessels. Her internship with Always Moving Professionals in Elizabeth, NJ, while earning her degree, gave her varied commercial design experience, including logo redesign, social media campaign work, and poster and truck wrap design. She currently is working with her network of graphic design colleagues on various design projects, while continuing to work as a sales assistant for Nichimo International, Inc., an international trading company in Carlstadt, NJ.
