At home in Paris, France, student Constance Beucharlat is intrigued by the world of fashion and actively pursues her studies. However, here at Berkeley College, she has gained an international perspective on the subject that she says has increased her “passion for fashion.”

Ms. Beucharlat is one of 15 students from Mod’Art International, a fashion school in Paris, France, participating in an inbound Study Abroad opportunity at Berkeley College in New York City. Students from Mod’Art have enrolled in the Study Abroad program since 2010, with more than 200 students having taken fashion courses at Berkeley College.

Ms. Beucharlat is enjoying her first time in New York City, which she feels is more business-centric than her home city of Paris. “What I like is how business and fashion work together in many ways,” she said.

Student Penelope Stoker of Nîmes, France, who has interned with Bergdorf Goodman, wants to be a buyer. She said she likes following young designers to see different styles emerge. “I like new designers and new trends,” she said. “Fashion is connected to everything – politics, art, architecture.” Her favorite parts of being at Berkeley College are the professors and that the campus is in the heart of New York City.

In March 2018, Kevin Luing, Berkeley College Chairman of the Board, had the chance to visit Mod’Art. He met with Pierre Azoulay, President, and Annabel Bismuth, Director, both of Mod’Art. Mr. Azoulay and Ms. Bismuth praised the Study Abroad program as Mr. Luing toured the campus, and spent some time talking with Mod’Art students.

Cynthia Marchese, Berkeley College Senior Vice President, International, also visited with Mod’Art in April 2018. “We’re pleased that this program at Berkeley College has met with continued success,” she said. “Partnerships with a number of European colleges have been instrumental in increasing global awareness of Berkeley College overseas.”

The inbound Study Abroad program at Berkeley College began in 2007 with a class of 31 students. This year more than 400 students from France, Germany, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Denmark are attending Berkeley College in Midtown Manhattan for abbreviated Study Abroad programs.

In all, Berkeley College holds partnerships with 20 European academic institutions who send students during three semesters throughout the academic year. “We look forward to welcoming more and more students over the coming years,” said Manuel Correa, PhD, Berkeley College Academic Head of Noncredit International programs.

The European students engage in either four or five Berkeley College courses in the areas of accounting, business, fashion, human resources, management and marketing. Some students stay an additional semester to complete internships.

In addition to the academic program, students participate in field trips associated with their academic studies and attend cultural events. These activities often are arranged by Ms. Marchese and Nori Jaffer, EdD, Berkeley College Vice President, International. “We want the students to experience New York City,” Dr. Correa said.

A leader in providing career-focused education since 1931, Berkeley College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and enrolls more than 7,100 students – including more than 440 international students – in its Master’s, Bachelor’s, and Associate’s degree and Certificate programs. Students can study in more than 20 career fields. Berkeley College is comprised of the Larry L. Luing School of Business®, the School of Professional Studies, the School of Health Studies and the School of Liberal Arts. The School of Graduate Studies offers an MBA in Management online and in Woodland Park, NJ.

Berkeley College has three New York campuses – Midtown Manhattan, Brooklyn and White Plains. In New Jersey there are four campuses – Newark, Paramus, Woodbridge and Woodland Park. Berkeley College Online® serves a global population. For five consecutive years, U.S. News & World Report has named Berkeley College among the Best Colleges for Online Bachelor’s Programs and among the Best Online Bachelor’s Programs for Veterans.
