SEASON OF GIVING: WHITE PLAINS
Berkeley College Gives Hope to Those in Need
through Relationship with Lifting Up Westchester
In 2015, the Enrollment Services Department of Berkeley College was looking for an activity that would build department camaraderie and give back to the Westchester County community.
“We researched many organizations, and Lifting Up Westchester was the perfect fit,” said Janet Tahiri, Berkeley College Hiring Coordinator. The mission of Lifting Up Westchester is to restore hope by providing those in need with food, shelter and support, lifting them to greater self-sufficiency with dignity and respect.
Since Berkeley College’s first holiday food drive for the organization in 2015, the College’s relationship with the organization has grown. In addition to a toy drive in 2015, the Enrollment Services Department spearheaded drives for Lifting Up Westchester’s summer programs, collecting towels, sunscreen and snacks for developmentally challenged teens and young adults.
This holiday season, the department held its annual Lifting Up Westchester food drive, as well as a holiday gift card drive for underprivileged teens in December.
“The need for gestures of kindness continues to grow,” said Nancy Inzinna, Volunteer and Community Outreach Manager for Lifting Up Westchester. “I have found Berkeley College students and staff to be truly committed to helping the community. Their support has made it easier to fulfill our mission.”
Trisha Farmer, Berkeley College Vice President, Enrollment Services, said her department’s efforts mirror the College’s long tradition of addressing the needs of the communities surrounding its campuses.
“This was a true team effort and I am very proud of my department for taking on these projects,” Ms. Farmer said. “Our team was happy to help Lifting Up Westchester and support its mission of serving Westchester County.”
