SEASON OF GIVING: MILITARY AND VETERANS
Berkeley Honors Gold Star Families with
Baseball Outing at Citi Field
On July 10, 2016, the Berkeley College Office of Military and Veterans Affairs (OMVA) hosted 18 Gold Star families at a special baseball event, honoring military families who have lost a loved one in combat.
The special event, created just for military families, included a meet and greet with New York Mets players, as well as food and refreshments for attendees, before the Mets faced off against the Washington Nationals at Citi Field in Flushing, Queens, NY.
The event was held in collaboration with Snowball Express and Children of Fallen Patriots, organizations that support military families who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
“We have been able to support these families for six consecutive years,” said Tami Pichardo, Director, Berkeley College OMVA. “It’s an exciting experience, knowing we are going to see the families again. As some are returning, we get to watch the kids growing up and share the excitement with them.”
This year’s event garnered the largest turnout since the initiative began, with 118 sports fans in attendance.
The Berkeley College OMVA regularly communicates with Gold Star families throughout the year, offering support and bringing them opportunities for special activities.
