Berkeley College Students Forge Volunteer Partnership
with Community FoodBank of New Jersey

Berkeley Dover

Berkeley College students from Dover and Newark visited the Community FoodBank of New Jersey in Hillside, NJ, several times in 2016, sorting food and household items and clearing space for new donations.

“What’s nice about the Community FoodBank is that they rely on volunteers, so they work really well with our students,” said Sandra Garcia, Director, Student Development and Campus Life. “The students are not just volunteering – they are learning about the mission of the organization and who they’re helping, and they have fun while they do it.”

Ms. Garcia said the students also enjoy networking with other volunteers and staff members.

“It’s a very uplifting atmosphere,” she said.

“Volunteers are our lifeline,” said Traci Hendricks, Volunteer Services Coordinator at the Community FoodBank, who schedules the Berkeley College students to volunteer. “Without them we could not do what must be done on a daily basis for those families in need. Thank you all for making a difference in those families’ lives.

Berkeley College Honors scholars also donated hours to the Community FoodBank in June, during the College’s 7th Annual Community Service Day.

The Community FoodBank of New Jersey, a member of Feeding America, distributes food and provides education and training to those in need throughout the Garden State. According to the organization, it has distributed some 600 million pounds of food valued at roughly $1 billion.

“The Dover students take deep pride in helping out the community,” said Derek Newberry, a Berkeley College student. “Volunteering at the Community FoodBank is always something we look forward to. We volunteer because we know that we are making a difference in the lives of others. Volunteering comes in many shapes and sizes, and no matter how it is done, the goal is still the same: Helping people in need.”
