Berkeley College graduates, family and friends will gather at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, NJ, on Friday, April 25, to honor and celebrate more than 2,000 Berkeley College graduates at the Commencement Ceremony of the Class of 2014. Camelia M. Valdes, Passaic County Prosecutor, will deliver the Commencement Address.

The College also will hold a Virtual Commencement to honor several hundred students who earned degrees through Berkeley College Online®. This virtual ceremony unites students worldwide in the celebration of their graduation from Berkeley College, an institution that was recently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the Best Colleges for Online Bachelor Degrees. The Virtual Commencement will include several addresses and a presentation of diplomas along with a profile for each graduate.

“The Class of 2014 is the largest graduating class in the history of Berkeley College,” said Dario A. Cortes, PhD, President of Berkeley College. “These Berkeley College graduates are embarking on exciting new journeys and careers for which they are well prepared. We are proud to celebrate their accomplishments.”

The graduates from Berkeley College locations in New Jersey and New York and Berkeley College Online will receive Bachelor’s and Associate’s degrees and Certificates.  During their college careers, the members of the graduating class served at more than 1,000 internships at companies that included Bloomingdale’s, Price Waterhouse Cooper, The New York Times Company and Verizon, to name a few.

Ms. Valdes also will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Ms. Valdes is the first Latina county prosecutor in the State of New Jersey, the first woman prosecutor in Passaic County, and the first lead prosecutor of Dominican ancestry in the United States.  Ms. Valdes, first generation college student, was born in the Bronx and raised in Newark by Dominican immigrant parents.  She saw the ravages of crime in those communities and resolved to dedicate herself to advancing the law and public safety to ensure the well-being of future generations.

John McGarraghy, Trustee Emeriti, will receive an honorary Doctor of Pedagogy degree.  Mr. McGarraghy served as Berkeley College Trustee from 1992 to 2002. During his tenure he chaired Board Committees on Academic and Student Affairs and Long-Range Planning. As a respected and informed leader in the higher education community, Mr. McGarraghy guided the Berkeley College New York locations through the rigorous process of securing initial Middle States Commission on Higher Education accreditation and worked diligently to ensure that the College’s first Baccalaureate degrees advanced the College mission and promoted academic excellence.

A leader in providing career-focused education for more than 80 years, Berkeley College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and enrolls approximately 8,000 students — including more than 900 international students — in its Baccalaureate and Associate degree and Certificate programs.
