NEW JERSEY ASSEMBLY SPEAKER SHEILA Y. OLIVER TO ADDRESS
BERKELEY COLLEGE GRADUATES AT 2010 COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
Berkeley College President Dario A. Cortes, PhD, is pleased to announce that New Jersey Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver will deliver the Commencement Address during the Berkeley College 2010 Commencement Ceremony on Friday, April 30, 2010, at the Izod Center, 50 Route 120 in East Rutherford. Commencement exercises will begin at 9 a.m.
Approximately 1,400 students from Berkeley College New Jersey, New York, and Online will receive Bachelor’s or Associate’s degrees.
“Speaker Sheila Oliver epitomizes the values of leadership and service to the community,” said Dr. Cortes. “Berkeley College is delighted that Speaker Oliver will be sharing her personal experiences which reflect her belief that education is a critical component of lifelong success.”
Speaker Oliver is the first African-American woman to lead a legislative house in New Jersey. She represents the 34th Legislative District, which includes Clifton, East Orange, Glen Ridge, Montclair and Woodland Park (formerly West Paterson).
Speaker Oliver was first elected to the Assembly in 2003. During her time in office, she co-sponsored the law creating the Department of Children and Families as well as sponsored legislation creating paid family leave and amending the state’s wrongful death law.
Speaker Oliver is an assistant Essex County administrator, and previously served as director of the Essex County Department of Citizen Services and the Department of Economic Development Training and Employment.
Prior to joining the New Jersey Legislature, Speaker Oliver served as an Essex County freeholder and as past president of the East Orange Board of Education. She has served on a number of civic boards and commissions and remains an active volunteer.
Speaker Oliver earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and a Master of Science degree in Community Organization, Planning and Administration from Columbia University.
