Photo Caption: On June 1, 2016, a group of law students from Spain visited the New York State Supreme Court in Mineola, Long Island, to learn about the U.S. Court System. The students, who are pursuing careers in the legal field in their home country, are enrolled in a 12-week Berkeley College Study Abroad program, during which they are taking legal and business courses with Berkeley College professors. The Hon. Denise Sher, Nassau County Supreme Court Justice, spoke to the students about her role in the judicial process. The group also had the opportunity to observe an ongoing civil trial, during which they heard testimony, closing arguments, and the judge’s charge to the jury. “The visit to New York State Supreme Court gave the students a first-hand look at how the civil jury system works in the United States,” said Kenneth Husserl, JD, Professor, Legal Studies, Berkeley College School of Professional Studies (pictured fourth from right). He added that the trip inspired discussions about how the judicial systems differ between Spain and the United States. Through its Study Abroad program, Berkeley College welcomes 500 students annually from countries such as Germany, France, Denmark and Mexico.
