Photo Caption: On April 18, 2018, a group of law students from Spain visited the New York State Supreme Court in Mineola, Long Island, to learn about the U.S. Court system. The students, from Centro Universitario Villanueva in Madrid, are pursuing careers as lawyers in their home country, and are enrolled in a 12-week inbound Study Abroad program at Berkeley College. While at the College, the students are taking courses including Introduction to Law and the American Legal System, Constitutional Law, and Public Speaking.

During the visit, the students observed a divorce trial and spoke with the Hon. Steven M. Jaeger, Nassau County Supreme Court Justice, about the judicial process. “It was a very rewarding experience,” said Raquel Salinero Arteaga, one of the students. “The Spanish judicial system is totally different from the U.S. judicial system in so many aspects, such as trial procedure.” Kenneth Husserl, JD, Professor, Legal Studies, School of Professional Studies (pictured right), said the students observed testimony and arguments by the attorneys concerning admissibility of evidence in the case. “The purpose of our visit was to give students an opportunity to get the look and feel of an American courtroom,” he said.

Through its inbound Study Abroad program, Berkeley College welcomes 400 students annually from countries such as Germany, Norway, Portugal and Denmark.
