Healing the Children® New Jersey (HTCNJ) recently recognized individuals who support the organization in its mission to provide medical care to children in need around the world. Since its inception, HTCNJ has provided care to more than 37,000 children, helping nearly 1,000 children each year. The 2018 HTCNJ Gala was held on May 12, 2018, at Canoe Brook Country Club in Short Hills, NJ.

Joseph Charleman, CST, CSFA, CRCST, LPN, Chair, Surgical Technology and Surgical Processing Technician program, Berkeley College School of Health Studies, received the Sue Tiger Memorial Award, and Berkeley College was honored with the Partnership in Caring Award.

Mr. Charleman will have served as a Trip Administrator on 10 medical missions with HTCNJ by the end of 2018. As Chair of the Surgical Technology program, he shares his passion for doing good with students and alumni, who also have participated in medical missions. The Sue Tiger Memorial Award is named for the late Sue Tiger, who established and directed the Medical Teams Abroad Program.

“What motivated me to get involved with Healing the Children New Jersey was the healing and compassion they provide globally to children in need,” Mr. Charleman said. “To be able to make a difference in the world one child at a time is what the medical missions offer you. You are changing lives.”

Berkeley College has collaborated with HTCNJ since 2013. In addition to sponsoring medical missions abroad, faculty, alumni and students in the School of Health Studies have provided pro-bono care, extending learning beyond the classroom. Students also volunteer their time to count, package and sterilize medical equipment for upcoming medical missions. The Partnership in Caring Award recognizes a commitment to the humanitarian cause and vision of HTCNJ.

“These medical missions provide real-world, practical experience for our students, but students also understand that what they are doing has meaning,” said Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College. “It’s life-changing for our students. It’s life-changing for our faculty. Healing the Children is doing extraordinary work, and Berkeley College is so proud to partner with them.”

HTCNJ also honored Notchview Pediatrics with the Sergio Award for offering primary care free of charge to children in the HTCNJ International Inbound Program, and Jim Moffat, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist with the Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, PA, with the Jhansi Chowdary Nurse of the Year Award.
