More than 80 digital learning professionals, educators and administrators discussed opportunities and challenges in online learning during the OLC Collaborate conference on August 7, 2018, hosted by Berkeley College in Midtown Manhattan. The OLC Collaborate program, presented in partnership with the Online Learning Consortium (OLC), focused on predictive analytics, federal and state guidelines for distance learning, and advances in identity verification, as well as served as a platform for sharing observations and creating change.

 

“As Berkeley College celebrates 20 years of online learning, we are proud to host this conference as a platform where digital educators can share their ideas, thoughts and challenges,” said Sharon Goldstein, Campus Operating Officer, Berkeley College Online®.

 

Liz Ciabocchi, EdD, Vice Provost for Digital Learning, St. John’s University, a member of the OLC Board of Directors, spoke about the ways OLC meets its mission to advance quality online learning.

 

“Whether in rural America or in New York City, OLC focuses on the issues and opportunities we face in this constantly changing educational landscape,” Dr. Ciabocchi said.

 

Diane Recinos, EdD, Senior Vice President, Student Success, Berkeley College, presented “Forecasting the Future: Utilizing Predictive Analytics to Identify Trends and Patterns of Online Learners that Support their Overall Success.” She discussed the many challenges students face – from financial to family and work obligations – and the ways Berkeley College is utilizing technology to enhance student success.

 

“Predictive analytics have given us the opportunity to be proactive rather than reactive,” she said.

 

Devon Cancilla, PhD, Vice Provost for Online Learning, University of Missouri at Kansas City, discussed advances in biometric authentication of online students, and the importance of student identification – not only in the digital classroom, but also in relation to student aid.

 

“It’s up to you as an institution to know that a student is really who they say they are,” Dr. Cancilla said.

 

Russell Poulin, Director, Policy and Analysis, WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET), spoke about changes in federal, state and accreditation policies. Breakout sessions also focused on student affordability, accreditation and compliance, and a panel examined “Education in 2028” and the future of online learning.

 

Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College, said the College was proud to partner with OLC and to host the OLC Collaborate event.

 

“What is ultimately important is student outcomes and student success,” President Smith said. “The students are why we are here.”
