Students in the Superior Sound Marching Band from the Dr. Susan S. McKinney Secondary School of the Arts, directed by Will Hylton, kicked off the 85th anniversary of Berkeley College on Monday, September 19, 2016, with a lively medley of songs as they marched through the downtown Brooklyn campus at 255 Duffield Street. Among their many appreciative greeters of students, faculty and staff was Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College.

“Dr. Susan S. McKinney Secondary School of the Arts and Berkeley College share a common mission of education – we’re a place where hope begins and dreams come true,” said President Smith. He went on to acknowledge the school’s namesake, Dr. Susan S. McKinney, who was the first African American to earn a medical degree in New York.

Berkeley College marks its 85th Anniversary throughout 2016 with various community-based activities at its eight locations throughout New York and New Jersey and online. Examples include a focus on volunteer service, including a compilation of 85 Acts of Kindness, an emphasis on 85 Alumni Success Stories and images of jubilation at college graduation, and workshops and programs that celebrate student diversity and student achievement at Berkeley.
