COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM CHINA RETURN TO THEIR HOMELAND FOLLOWING SUMMER IMMERSION PROGRAM AT BERKELEY COLLEGE
David Testone, Academic Director of the Summer Program, explained that this assignment gave students the opportunity to be creative, using a simple business model, to present their ideas for new businesses as part of the curriculum. The presentations included descriptions of the product or service, its market, competition, management structure, benefits and advantages, and financial projections. In addition to the two restaurant businesses, other ideas included an indoor, multi-level entertainment center for vacationers in China; an environmental paper products company in the United States; an importer and exporter of China stone based in China and the United States; and a health tracker mobile application that would begin in China and extend globally.
In addition to studying Business Communication, part of the Summer Immersion program in American Culture included refining English skills. Each student from China was paired with a Berkeley College student ambassador. This partnership created extraordinary bonds and lasting relationships. The students lived in the residence halls and went on field trips together.
“The Business Plan is very important,” said Yongxiang Zhang (Victory) who served as student group leader opening the Italian restaurant business in China.
Qian Peng (Barbara), the student leader of the group that planned to open the Chinese restaurant in New York said, “I became more independent through this experience. I learned a lot and improved my speaking and knowledge of economics. Financial studies will be useful in starting our own business.”
