Smith, President of Berkeley College. The College was recognized for its 85 Acts of Kindness initiative, part of its 85th anniversary celebration.

Berkeley College was among 39 businesses recognized with the Champion of Good Works award during the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey (CIANJ) Chairman’s Reception, held on March 15, 2017, at Nanina’s in the Park in Belleville, NJ. This was the third consecutive year that Berkeley College has received the Champion of Good Works award.

Berkeley College was honored for its “85 Acts of Kindness” initiative, part of the College’s 85th anniversary celebration. Associates volunteered with and donated to organizations including the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, the Salvation Army, the Academic Decathlon of New Jersey, Oasis – A Haven for Women and Children, and Children’s Aid and Family Services, among others.

“The values of social responsibility have gone hand in hand with our identity as an organization for more than 85 years,” said Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College. “We could not think of a better way to celebrate our anniversary year than to encourage our faculty, staff, alumni and students to share their time and talents with their communities.”

In 2016 the College was recognized as a Champion of Good Works for hosting a Spring Veterans Career Expo through a partnership with Be A Hero – Hire A Hero, an initiative that helps veterans transition to civilian life. In 2015 the College was honored for its partnership with Healing the Children® New Jersey, through which faculty and alumni participate in medical missions abroad for children in need.

New Jersey manufacturers, retailers, hospitals and banks were among those honored at the Chairman’s Reception, which was attended by more than 260 business executives. Award winners and their stories are featured in the March issue of COMMERCE magazine, the media arm of CIANJ.

“For most of the companies that we are honoring tonight, their generosity and kindness is part of their culture,” said Andrew Silverstein, Chairman, CIANJ Board of Directors. “The public is often unaware of the magnitude and scope of these good works. This reception is our way of shining a spotlight on ‘Companies that Care.’ ”
