CIANJ CHAMPION OF GOOD WORKS AWARD RECOGNIZES
BERKELEY COLLEGE FOR MEDICAL MISSION TO ECUADOR

The Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey (CIANJ) has named Berkeley College a Champion of Good Works for a medical mission to Ecuador that benefited Healing the Children® New Jersey (HTCNJ). The College was one of 31 organizations recognized for their charitable works during a reception at the Stony Hill Inn in Hackensack, NJ, on March 11. More than 80 businesses were considered for the award.

“For most of these companies, their donations, kindness and community outreach are part of their corporate culture – their mission,” said Martin Kafafian, Chairman of the CIANJ Board of Directors. “The public at-large is often unaware of the magnitude and scope of the good works. This reception is our way of shining a spotlight on ‘Companies that Care.’ ”

Joseph Charleman, Chair, Surgical Technology and Surgical Processing Technician programs, Berkeley College School of Health Studies, who spearheaded the medical mission, accepted the award on behalf of the College.

In June 2014, Mr. Charleman was one of three faculty members and an alumna from the Berkeley College School of Health Studies who joined a team of medical professionals for the journey to Guayaquil, Ecuador. The team assisted with 24 surgical interventions and evaluated 44 patients with pediatric urology issues at Hospital de Niños Dr. Roberto Gilbert, the largest pediatric hospital in Ecuador.

Prior to the trip, faculty, staff and students from the Berkeley College School of Health Studies sterilized and packed surgical instruments for the medical mission. In the classroom, students learned about the health care challenges in developing nations and how they could use their expertise to assist children in need.

The mission supported Berkeley College’s symbiotic relationship with local health organizations such as Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, and its commitment to local nonprofits such as HTCNJ, which assists children in New Jersey and worldwide.

The CIANJ is a statewide business advocacy organization based in Paramus. It represents more than 900 member companies from every business sector.

A leader in providing career-focused education since 1931, Berkeley College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and enrolls approximately 8,000 students – including more than 900 international students – in its Baccalaureate and Associate degree and Certificate programs.
