CHINESE STUDENTS AT BERKELEY COLLEGE ARRIVE IN WHITE PLAINS
Photo Caption: Michael Smith, President of Berkeley College, greets college students and faculty from the Guizhou Province in China at Berkeley College in White Plains, NY, where the group is participating in a 90-day American business and cultural immersion program.
The Berkeley College Student Ambassadors aboard the bus that pulled in to John F. Kennedy International Airport early yesterday morning were already energized as they waited to greet their new friends from universities in the Guizhou Province of China.
The entourage welcomed the 38 Chinese students and professors with warm hellos amid cameras and mobile phone clicks and flashes. The students from China will spend the next 90 days at Berkeley College in White Plains as part of a business and management cultural immersion program.
The biggest greeting came from Michael Smith, President of Berkeley College, who met with students upon their arrival in White Plains.
“Welcome to America. We want you to learn here and make lifelong friends. This is a day you will remember for the rest of your lives as you begin your journey at Berkeley College,” Mr. Smith told students.
This 90-day summer program includes special classes in English Business Communications, visits to Americanhistorical and cultural sites, and several business and government institutions in White Plains.
The members of the Chinese delegation also met their Berkeley Buddies – Berkeley College student ambassadors who will help them understand and adapt to American culture through continual close interaction throughout their stay. Together they helped the newcomers settle in, have a buffet lunch at a local restaurant, shop at Walmart, and learn new phrases in English. In return, the Chinese visitors taught the American students greetings in Mandarin and helped them use chopsticks during the luncheon. All are excited about learning from each other and forging lifelong friendships.
Likewise, the Chinese faculty members also will be introduced to American culture, observe several Berkeley College classes and learn U.S. teaching methodologies.
On July 29th the group will present a special gift from the Guizhou Province to White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach.
