Nonprofit organizations throughout New Jersey and New York participated in a career fair dedicated specifically to the nonprofit sector at Berkeley College in Woodland Park, NJ, on August 3, 2016. Sixty students and alumni attended the event and met with nonprofit employers, including the American Red Cross, Children’s Aid and Family Services, the New Jersey Association on Correction, Project H.O.P.E., Oasis – A Haven for Women and Children, and others.
“It is important to have students learn about careers among nonprofit businesses because this is a viable and supportive networking community with many opportunities for employment,” said Arthur Pann, Berkeley College Senior Director, Career Services. “Often there are volunteer and internship opportunities that can lead to hiring for permanent positions.”
Austin DeSavino and Sarah Marcus Greulich, community managers from the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, Cedar Knolls, NJ, were impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and awareness for what they are looking for in a future career. They also appreciated Berkeley College’s efforts in dedicating a Career Fair to the nonprofit community. “There is always a need for educated, dedicated and passionate individuals, so it is awesome that Berkeley College is doing this. I think the nonprofit community doesn’t always get the attention it deserves,” Mr. DeSavino said.
Susana Mantilla of Woodland Park, NJ, is a second-year student majoring in Justice Studies – Criminal Justice. She has been working at the nonprofit Oasis - A Haven for Women and Children in Paterson, NJ, for the past three months through Berkeley College’s Federal Work-Study program, and came to the Career Fair looking for an internship in her senior year.
“I’ve always been interested in human services, so as soon as I read about Oasis’ mission to help women and children improve from the poverty by providing education and resources they may need, I knew it was a place I wanted to work,” Ms. Mantilla said. “There are a lot of jobs out there that you do not really think about, which can help you gain experience.”
Lorraine L. Jarvis, Manager of Operations for Her Justice in New York, NY, a nonprofit that provides legal services and guidance for low-income women, applauded Berkeley College for giving students an alternative to the corporate world. “You’re giving them the option to decide, or at least informing them that there is more out there for them to research,” she said.
Her Justice currently has two students from Berkeley College placed in internship positions, and Ms. Jarvis has turned to Berkeley College for dedicated interns for nearly a decade. “Berkeley College students come prepared. They especially come technology-ready, and are always open to learning,” she said.
