Gayon Drummond of Brooklyn in Kings County, NY, a graduate of the Berkeley College School of Health Studies Practical Nurse (PN) program, was honored during a pinning ceremony held on May 4, 2018 in Woodland Park, NJ.
Josiane Hickson, EdD, RN-BC, NE-BC, Chair, Nursing and Patient Care Technician programs, Berkeley College School of Health Studies, gave the welcome address and congratulated the graduates. “You’ve been armed with the power and knowledge of nursing,” Dr. Hickson said. “Go out and provide excellent clinical care and advocate for healthcare as a human right, regardless of where your patients were born, their ability to pay, the color of their skin or their gender. Treat your patients with dignity, respect and compassion. These are the basic human rights that we at Berkeley College have impressed upon you.”
Eva Skuka, MD, PhD, Dean, Berkeley College School of Health Studies, also addressed the graduates. “Now you get to realize your dreams of becoming a nurse, to put into practice all that you have learned and to conquer new challenges,” she said. “We hope that you are inspired to become the best nurses for your patients, and wish you long careers with fond memories of your days at Berkeley College.”
In addition to the PN program, Berkeley College offers the first and only Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program in New Jersey. The College’s expanded Health Studies offerings provide a premier pathway to career growth in nursing and other health and medical-related fields.
After receiving their honors, the 34 graduates recited the Florence Nightingale Pledge, promising to uphold the integrity of the nursing profession.
In this profession, those with a BSN are Registered Nurses who carry out an expanded role in their assignments. They collaborate and coordinate with members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to create, provide and evaluate customized care plans for their patients. They engage in wellness promotion, disease prevention and health maintenance with a focus on patient-centered education, and they are prepared to conduct research to improve nursing practices and healthcare outcomes.
Practical Nurses provide care to their patients in a variety of healthcare environments, including physicians’ offices, clinics, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, rehabilitation centers and home healthcare settings.
The Berkeley College School of Health Studies was created to provide career-focused education in some of today’s most in-demand healthcare professions – in clinical specializations, as well as healthcare administration and management. Degree and certificate programs have been carefully developed to meet the needs of this important field.
