“These events remind us that there are people who care about our loss – who remember our loved ones.”

Shalan Webb, widow of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Chris Webb

The New York Mets game on July 12, 2015, seemed like any other day at Citi Field. But in the crowd was a special group of fans – the families of fallen U.S. troops.

The outing was sponsored by Berkeley College and organized by its Office of Military and Veterans Affairs, which has been recognized regionally and nationally for its dedication to and programs for the military.

“Berkeley College was proud to honor the sacrifice of the 12 military families who attended this year’s event,” said Richard E. Robitaille, EdD, Berkeley College Associate Vice President, Office of Military and Veterans Affairs, adding that this is the fifth year Berkeley has sponsored a similar event. “At these events, families who have shared tremendous loss can come together to make happy memories.”

The outing at Citi Field included a photo and autograph session with Mets players, as well as lunch served in a special viewing area. The Mets took on the Arizona Diamondbacks, winning 5-3.

Shalan Webb of Fair Haven, NJ, lost her husband, Army Staff Sgt. Chris Webb, in Baghdad in 2007. Ms. Webb attended the event with her daughter, Mary, who was six months old when her father was killed.

“These events remind us that there are people who care about our loss – who remember our loved ones,” said Ms. Webb said after a Berkeley-sponsored baseball event in 2014. “It’s a safe place for the children to talk about their dads. I love spending time with the other widows. We all get it.”
