Great Oak Berkeley College Hispanic Wellness Fair

“Health is very important to employees and businesses.”

Carlos Medina, President, Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey

Berkeley College was a sponsor of the 2nd Annual Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SHCCNJ) Health and Wellness Fair, held earlier this year at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ. The event invited residents statewide to learn about health and wellness, as well as careers in the healthcare fields.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Hispanics face a higher death rate from diabetes, as well as poorly controlled blood pressure and obesity. The CDC encourages healthcare professionals to work to eliminate language barriers and counsel high-risk patients.

During the wellness fair, Berkeley College students and professors conducted health screenings and more than 100 exhibitors – including large corporations, small businesses, and independent health professionals – shared their knowledge about best practices and products. Berkeley was also featured in a segment about the health fair on Ana Pereyra’s program, En Directo

“Health is very important to employees and businesses,” Carlos Medina, President of the SHCCNJ, told En Directo, adding that many business owners are focusing on the health industry.

Panelists from the Berkeley College School of Health Studies included Patricia Gonzalez, MD, Professor, Medical Assistant program, and Jose A. Montalvo, MD, RMA, CCMA, Interim Chair, Health Sciences, who participated in the “Good Health Starts with Breastfeeding.” Also, Alejandro Henao, MD, Professor, Medical Assistant program, participated in “The Importance of Preventive Medicine.”

The Hon. Ras J. Baraka, Mayor of Newark, and other elected officials welcomed guests to the event.
