Student-Athletes and Coach Earn Conference Recognition

The Berkeley College Women’s Tennis team captured the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) Championship in October, defeating four-time defending champions Pratt Institute. The team is only two years old and shows much potential, proven when the HVIAC announced its 2015 Women’s Tennis All-Conference team. Three Berkeley College student-athletes received honors – Ceren Aksoy, Maria Avila and Kate Zharkova and the HVIAC named Berkeley College Women’s Tennis Head Coach David Eddy as Coach of the Year. The team ended the season with 8 wins and 1 loss, and defeated the four-time defending champion Pratt Institute by a score of 9-0.

Berkeley College student-athlete Ceren Aksoy of Istanbul, Turkey, was named HVIAC Player of the Year. Maria Avila of Tarija, Bolivia, earned the conference’s co-Rookie of the Year honor, and Kate Zharkova from Chelyabinsk, Russia, earned All-Conference honors.

Mr. Eddy brought to the coach’s position more than 40 years of experience as a professional tennis player, coach and United States Professional Tennis Association certified teaching professional when he accepted the position to lead the Berkeley College Knights in the summer of 2014. In the past, he competed in most major tournaments throughout the world, including the French Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon.
