BERKELEY COLLEGE WELCOMES MODELL’S SPORTING GOODS
CEO MITCHELL B. MODELL AS 2009 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
Berkeley College President Dario A. Cortes, PhD, is pleased to announce that Modell’s Sporting Goods CEO Mitchell B. Modell will deliver the Commencement Address during the Berkeley College 2009 Commencement Ceremony on Friday, April 24, 2009, at the Izod Center, 50 Route 120 in East Rutherford. Commencement exercises will begin at 9 a.m.
Approximately 1,300 students from Berkeley College New Jersey, New York, and Online campuses will receive Bachelor’s or Associate’s degrees.
“Mr. Modell epitomizes how a strong work ethic, family values, and dedication to the community at-large can lead to personal and professional accomplishment,” said Dr. Cortes. “Berkeley College is delighted that Mr. Modell will impart his wisdom to our graduates as they continue their own journeys toward success.”
Modell’s Sporting Goods was founded in lower Manhattan in 1889 by Mr. Modell’s great-grandfather, Morris A. Modell, and four generations of the family have expanded the retailer to include more than 140 stores in 11 states. The company celebrates its 120th year in 2009.
In addition to being actively involved in running the family business, Mr. Modell is the Chairman of the New York City Sports Commission, appointed by the Mayor.
He serves on the Board of Directors of the Police Athletic League, NYC & Company (Conventions & Visitors Bureau), and National Retail Federation. He also serves on the Jay Baker Retail Advisory Board at the Wharton School of Business, and is a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization, World Presidents’ Organization, Chief Executives Organization, Friars Club, Forum Club, Association for a Better New York, and the Partnership for New York City.
In 2007, Mr. Modell received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which pays tribute to US citizens of diverse origins who have made great contributions to their community and country.
He is a graduate of Boston University School of Management and currently lives in New Jersey with his wife and three children.
