Berkeley College launched its inaugural Study Abroad program with a group of undergraduate students from the Larry L. Luing School of Business® enrolled at Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences in Cologne, Germany.
“This is the beginning of an important global learning opportunity for Berkeley College undergraduates,” said Elana Zolfo, EdD, Dean, Berkeley College Larry L. Luing School of Business®. “The Berkeley College Study Abroad program will broaden the horizons of these students, affording them opportunities to learn international business practices that will set them apart in their chosen career paths.”
The initial group of students in the Berkeley College Study Abroad program represent fields of study in programs such as Business Administration, Fashion Merchandising and Management, and International Business, offered through the Berkeley College Larry L. Luing School of Business.
The Berkeley College students in Cologne are taking courses taught in English titled International Business Ethics and Sustainability; Management Game: Entrepreneurial Knowledge and Business Plan; Current Affairs in Global Business; and Intercultural Competence. In addition to this, they are participating in the courses Academic Writing and German Language.
The students are living in Mühlheim, a diverse neighborhood in Cologne popular among young people, and have been assigned volunteer student “mentors” from Hochschule Fresenius who have completed their semesters at Berkeley College or plan to attend a semester at Berkeley College in New York City. The students also will visit points of interest in the area such as the world-famous twin-spired Cologne Cathedral and the Chocolate Museum, go on a cruise on the Rhine River, and meet with several businesses during their stay.
“This program addresses the three ‘I’s – immersion, integration and inclusion. Berkeley College students immerse in the local culture, learn in an integrated classroom with Hochschule Fresenius students, sharing a dynamic intellectual exchange, and, are part of an inclusive and safe environment. Both Berkeley and Fresenius students will benefit from this transformative experience,” said Priya S. Nayar, Director, North America, Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences.
Two years ago, civic leaders joined representatives from Fresenius University of Germany and Berkeley College to laud the partnership between the two institutions of higher learning at a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at Berkeley College. The partnership offers Fresenius University students the opportunity to gain intercultural abilities and academic experience by studying in facilities designed especially for Fresenius at Berkeley in New York City.
