Berkeley College students enrolled in the Health Services course Long Term and Residential Care heard from a panel of healthcare professionals from the northern New Jersey area on August 11, 2016 at Berkeley College in Woodland Park, NJ.

“I wanted a good mix of speakers in the healthcare profession who would have messages that would resonate with our students,” said Michael Ruiz de Somocurcio, Professor, Health Services, Larry L. Luing School of Business®.

While giving the students a deeper understanding of what their careers in healthcare entail, the speakers reinforced the importance of having passion.

“I find my work exciting,” said Donna Ambrose, Liaison, Ascend Hospice, Cranford, NJ. “Every day is different, and you never know what’s going to happen, but you have to have a passion for healthcare.”

Lisa Rhoads, Administrator, CareOne at The Cupola, Paramus, NJ, said, “You might have to start at the bottom and just get your foot in the door, but if you’re like me and you care about helping people, you’ll love it.  I wouldn’t want to do anything else.”

The two additional speakers who participated in this panel were Judy Amir, Essex County Liaison, Ascend Home Health, Rochelle Park, NJ; and Beth Stasyshyn, Vice President of Business Development, CareOne Management, LLC, Fort Lee, NJ.

Berkeley College offers an AAS in Health Services Administration and a BBA in Health Services Management through the Larry L. Luing School of Business. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a Health Services student club, which offers guest speakers and learning beyond the classroom. Graduates may pursue positions with hospitals, physicians’ offices, clinics, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, and numerous other types of healthcare-related facilities.
