BERKELEY COLLEGE STUDENT COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER TELLS GRADUATES: ‘BE PROUD OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS;
BE HUMBLED BY YOUR FAILURES’

Photo Caption: Bonnie Schiwal of Hillside, NJ, served as the student speaker for the Class of 2018 during the Berkeley College Commencement ceremony, held on May 11, 2018, at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. More than 2,300 students received Certificates, Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Ms. Schiwal received an Associate in Applied Science in Surgical Technology.

Ms. Schiwal had a three-year-old daughter when she returned to school for a higher degree, and her partner was encouraging. Still, there were moments when she and her family faced hardships, including homelessness, and Ms. Schiwal considered giving up her studies. However, Ms. Schiwal said through the tears and trials, Berkeley College faculty and her support network urged her forward. “Be proud of not only your accomplishments; be humbled by your failures,” Ms. Schiwal said. “We need failures to build our character. Take all your setbacks, sorrows, joys and achievements, and use them to be the strong, capable person you are.”
