Berkeley College Student-Athlete Excels
Berkeley College student-athlete Keenan Langston and the Men’s Basketball team are having an outstanding year. The Knights hold 14 consecutive wins and counting, while Mr. Langston reached a 1,000-point milestone in January 2016 – only the fifth player in Berkeley history to do so. Mr. Langston recently shared his thoughts on his success and his educational journey at Berkeley College.
Name: Keenan Langston
Q: Describe the dynamic of this year’s team.
A: This is my third year, and this year’s team is by far the best. Everyone is locked in and has that hunger to win and be successful. Our preparation has been phenomenal, and our practices are always intense. There are no egos on this team – everyone has one goal in mind: To win.
Q: What is it that makes the Knights so successful?
A: All of the guys on this team deal with challenges off of the court, but once we step on the court, we come together as a family and we have tremendous chemistry. We won the National Championship a season ago, and it has only increased our hunger to continue to be successful. It’s great to see and experience.
Q: What are your hopes for this season?
A: We want to repeat as HVIAC and USCAA champions. As for the three seniors on this team, I want us to finish this season strong and then go on to graduate. As for the rest of the guys on the team, I want them to continue to improve themselves both on the court and in the classroom. As important as success is on the court, I want them to realize that education always comes first, and balance is key.
Q: How did it feel to hit the 1,000-point milestone in your athletic career?
A: It felt great because I broke the record in two and a half years. It was great to accomplish that. All of my hard work – practicing in the summer, staying up late to practice – paid off, and it’s very gratifying.
Q: How has Berkeley College contributed to your success, either in the classroom or on the court?
A: Berkeley College’s professors and deans are amazingly helpful. They want all of the College’s students to graduate and succeed. They serve as positive influences and encourage us to do well and pursue our dreams. On the court, I have learned the values of teamwork and sacrifice, and I have instituted those values into other endeavors in my life.
Q: Why did you choose Berkeley College?
A: I applied to Berkeley College because it was near my home and I liked the idea of small classes, which for me was a better learning environment. When I met the coach before the start of my first quarter, he was very interested in my skill level and we connected very quickly. He has inspired me greatly to complete my degree.
Q: What are your career aspirations?
A: I would like to open a sports-related business one day. I am still trying to figure out what the function/focus of that business will be, but that is my ultimate goal. As it pertains to basketball, I would like to stay involved in the game by becoming an assistant coach.
