Berkeley College Student Anca Barbu Exhibits Artwork

Inspired by Van Gogh, Monet, and Henri Rousseau

Berkeley College is exhibiting the artwork of Anca Barbu, a student majoring in International Business, at its New York City Midtown Campus Gallery, First Floor Lobby, 3 East 43rd Street. Her exhibit will be on display from August 3 through 31.  It is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and on Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Ms. Barbu is a self-taught innovative artist whose work reveals the harmonious side of life with bright colors, optimistic themes, and textured motifs. She says her art comes from the joy of everyday life, inspiring her to incorporate vibrant, contrasting colors in her work.   Ms. Barbu says she has never formally studied art, but that her mother is very creative and has always encouraged her.  She has also always admired the work of Van Gogh, Monet, and Henri Rousseau.  When painting, she often listens to the music of Pink Floyd, letting the rhythm move her paintbrush.  Much of her work shows the beauty of women in harmony with nature but with an abstract twist.

“I like to portray women surrounded by plant life and the colorful aspects of nature.  My signature style is swirls and contrasting colors, a style that I feel makes paintings come alive," she says.

At the  Berkeley College New York City Midtown Campus, Ms. Barbu is a member of the Student Government Association and United Nations Club.  She plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2010. She then expects to apply to law school, with an eye toward a career in international business law. “No matter what, art will always play a role in my life,” she says.
