BERKELEY COLLEGE SPONSORS 5th ANNUAL INTERCOLLEGIATE
JUSTICE STUDIES DEBATE COMPETITION

Berkeley College recently hosted the 5th Annual Intercollegiate Justice Studies Debate Competition. Eight teams representing six colleges in the New York City metropolitan region debated the pros and cons of rescinding the “Exclusionary Rule,” which states that evidence seized by police illegally may not be used against a criminal defendant at trial.

“This debate competition provides an opportunity for our students to demonstrate their critical thinking skills and sharpen their reasoning abilities,” said Berkeley College President Dario A. Cortes, PhD. “This teaching and learning experience is consistent with the mission of Berkeley College, which focuses on our students’ success now and later in their career.”

“The debate also presents an opportunity for students to network with their peers as well as professionals,” said Berkeley College Dean, School of Professional Studies, Judith Kornberg, PhD. We are grateful for the support of faculty facilitators working with each of the teams, our keynote speaker, and our distinguished panel of judges.”

The keynote speaker for the program was David E. Chong, Public Safety Commissioner for the City of White Plains, NY. Mr. Chong has served in the law enforcement community his entire career, 22 years of which were with the New York City Police Department and included the position of Lieutenant Commander of Detectives.

The panel of judges has extensive experience in law enforcement and in the legal profession. Judges for the competition included Neil J. Carroll, Jr., Esq. Adjuster, Hudson County; Hon. James R. Cowhey, former Justice of the Supreme Court, White Plains, NY; Montgomery J, Delaney, Esq., practicing trial attorney and partner at Laub Delaney, LLP, White Plains, NY; Richard K. Farrell, Esq., Chief, Real Estate Fraud Unit, Kings County District Attorney’s Office; and James O’Keefe, PhD, Associate Dean and Instructor, St. John’s University, New York, NY.

Teams receiving cash prizes represented Quinnipiac University, CT (1st place); Monroe College, NY (2nd place); ASA, NY (3rd place); and Berkeley College, Garret Mountain Campus, NJ (4th place).
