Berkeley College Presents the Poetic Photography of Sandra Gottlieb

Berkeley College is exhibiting the photography of Sandra Gottlieb at its New York City Midtown Gallery, First Floor Lobby, 12 East 41st Street. This exhibit is on display from June 3 through 28 — Monday through Friday — from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm and on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Raised in Brooklyn, NY, Ms. Gottlieb studied ballet throughout her school years.  She attended Brooklyn College, and when not in classes, performed professionally with a number of ballet and modern dance companies. These performances gave her a feeling for movement and an awareness of change from moment to moment—both, she believes, contributing to her eventual photographic vision.  

When she received a camera as a birthday present, she found taking pictures immediately satisfying, and began studying at the International Center of Photography with photographer and master printer Jerry Vezzuso who strongly encouraged her to continue in this field.    

Ms. Gottlieb’s new interest in photography led to an affinity with a wide range of American abstract painters.

“I found in Rothko a strong sense of structure wedded to color,” she said.  “In Milton Avery, I recognized his very personal interpretation of reality, focused on the edge of the sea.  Morris Louis was a model for his veils of diaphanous color.”  She absorbed what she could from all of them, and found her work becoming more and more poetic, conveying the sense of impermanence in both nature and in human existence.    

Her solo exhibits include the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art, Midland, MI;  the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Atlanta, GA; Gadsden State Community College, Gadsden, AL;  and Louisburg College, Louisburg, NC.  Group exhibitions include Monmouth Museum, Lincroft, NJ; Brenda Taylor Gallery, New York, NY; Norwood University, West Palm Beach, FL; and the Noyes Museum of Art, Oceanville, NJ.

Ms. Gottlieb is a member of the Professional Women Photographers and the National Association of Women Artists.  She took first place in the nature/water category at the Prix de la Photographie in Paris, France.
