Berkeley College is exhibiting the artwork of Natsuki Takauji at its New York City Midtown Gallery, First Floor Lobby, 3 East 43rd Street. This exhibit is on display from November 5 through 30 – Monday through Friday – from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm and on Saturday from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. An artist’s reception will be held on Thursday, November 8, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.
Born in Tokyo, Japan, artist Natsuki Takauji says creativity was always part of her life. Through her early years, she was interested in painting, but also sewing, knitting, and cooking. She studied at Waseda University in Tokyo, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in creative writing. For a while she worked as a teacher and novelist, but came to realize what she wanted to do was paint.
Ms. Takauji came to New York in 2008 and starting drawing and painting intensively under Knox Martin, Bruce Dorfman, and Charles Hinman in the Art Students League of New York. She has since evolved to work in sculpture, welding, and carpentry, using mixed media such as fabrics, wood, and steel—all currently at her studio in Long Island, NY.
For the Berkeley College exhibit, Ms. Takauji says, “This series is my endeavor to generate something between painting and sculpture, between discord and harmony. Canvas and paint are manipulated to reveal unstructured and unknown subjects to the viewer. I manipulate color and shape—the end result, I hope, being something unknown, unstructured, and unspeakable.”
Ms. Takauji has exhibited her artwork at the Affordable Art Fair, New York, NY; Ouchi Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; the Manhattan Borough President’s Office, New York, NY; the Renaissance Java Café, Brooklyn, NY; and the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery, New York, NY. She also held a solo exhibition at the Atlas Café, Brooklyn, NY.
