Berkeley College Presents Honorary Degree to Modell's Sporting Goods CEO Mitchell B. Modell

Berkeley College presented Mitchell B. Modell, Modell’s Sporting Goods President and CEO, with an honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree during the Commencement Ceremony of Berkeley College on Friday, April 24, 2009, at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, NJ. Mr. Modell also delivered the Commencement Address during the ceremony.
More than 1,200 students from Berkeley College New Jersey, New York, and Online received Baccalaureate or Associate degrees.
“Mitchell is especially deserving of this degree,” said Berkeley College President Dario A. Cortes, PhD. “In addition to being a leader in the business community, he cares passionately about others and generously gives his time to help make a difference in our world.”
Berkeley College bestows honorary degrees upon members of the community whose leadership, service and values represent the ideals that the College strives to embody in its students.
Modell’s Sporting Goods was founded in lower Manhattan in 1889 by Mr. Modell’s great-grandfather, Morris A. Modell, and four generations of the family have expanded the retailer to include more than 140 stores in 11 states. The company celebrates its 120th year in 2009.
In addition to being actively involved in running the family business, Mr. Modell is the Chairman of the New York City Sports Commission, appointed by the Mayor.
He serves on the Board of Directors of the Police Athletic League, NYC & Company (Conventions & Visitors Bureau), and National Retail Federation. He also serves on the Jay Baker Retail Advisory Board at the Wharton School of Business and is a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization, World Presidents’ Organization, Chief Executives Organization, Friars Club, Forum Club, Association for a Better New York, and the Partnership for New York City.
In 2007, Mr. Modell received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which pays tribute to US citizens of diverse origins who have made great contributions to their community and country.
He is a graduate of Boston University School of Management and currently lives in New Jersey with his wife and three children.
