Photo Caption: This summer, the Student Development and Campus Life staff of Berkeley College Online® partnered with the Academy of St. Dorothy in Staten Island, NY, to create a Buddy Bench. Buddy Benches eliminate loneliness and foster friendships on the playground as schoolchildren are encouraged and taught ways to make new friends. The Online staff collected more than 800 pounds of various colors and types of plastic caps and lids, and brought 200 pounds of that collection to the Academy. Staff members are partnering now with two schools in New Jersey to make more benches. “The Buddy Bench collection is part of the Year of Giving, an initiative of Berkeley College Online as it celebrates 20 years of distance learning,” said Amy Castillo, Assistant Dean, Student Development and Campus Life, Berkeley College Online. Each month, Online chooses an activity that aligns with Berkeley Cares, which seeks to empower the Berkeley College community to positively impact society. Pictured (L to R) are Christie Nadratowski, Director, Student Development and Campus Life, Berkeley College Online; Sister Sharon McCarthy, Principal, Academy of St. Dorothy; Donna Ribertelli, Development and Events Planner, Academy of St. Dorothy; and Amy Castillo, Assistant Dean, Student Development and Campus Life, Berkeley College Online.
