BERKELEY COLLEGE NEW YORK STUDENT OF THE YEAR
APPROACHES ACADEMIC LIFE, COMMUNITY SERVICE WITH ZEAL

Berkeley College recently honored the achievements of Jaspreet Sethi of Plainview in Nassau County, NY, by presenting her with the New York Robert Maher Outstanding Student Award for 2010. Ms. Sethi, who completed her Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree in International Business, received the award during the Berkeley College Commencement Ceremony held at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, NJ, on Friday, April 30.

The Robert Maher Outstanding Student Award is presented annually to a member of the graduating class who has met high standards of academic excellence while overcoming personal, professional, or financial obstacles. Students are nominated for the award by Berkeley College faculty and staff.

“The highest honor bestowed upon a Berkeley College graduate is the Robert Maher Award,” said Berkeley College Senior Vice President for Student Success Thomas L. Thomas, PhD. “Each year a committee of faculty and administrators chooses a recipient who understands the value of education and demonstrates the tenacity and persistence to improve under difficult circumstances. Jaspreet has approached academic life with incredible zeal and determination to accomplish her dreams.”

Ms. Sethi, a native of New Delhi, India, is an International Student Scholarship recipient, as well as a member of the Sigma Beta Delta honor society. She was named to the Berkeley College President’s List and Dean’s List many times throughout her academic career.

Ms. Sethi was an active member of student life at Berkeley College, serving on a student panel for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education accreditation visit. She says Berkeley College gave her valuable experiences, both socially and academically.

“The best part about being at Berkeley is that you can easily build accessible and successful relationships with your peers and instructors,” said Ms. Sethi. “Educationally, the level of projects in the business courses is practical and challenging. I have had the experience of drafting and developing a business plan, and have been involved in several other research-based projects that have immensely broadened my range of knowledge and expanded my business acumen.”

Ms. Sethi also is an advocate for the local and global community. She volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, promoted literacy for Africa, and participated in the “Be A Star” program that provides outreach to senior citizens.

“I come from India – a country that has truly grounded me to be a holistic individual,” said Ms. Sethi. “I feel it should be everyone’s responsibility to contribute to the society in which one lives for we’re all connected in some way or the other.”

Ms. Sethi currently works as a Project Manager for Absolute Software Solution in Forest Hills, NY, a software development company. While attending school, she taught computer courses to working adults and adults with disabilities.

Following Commencement, Ms. Sethi plans to continue her education in Psychology and become actively involved in clinical research. She hopes to eventually return to India to use her acquired degrees and talents.

A leader in business education for 79 years, Berkeley College maintains an enrollment of more than 8,000 students, including 665 international students in its Baccalaureate and Associate degree programs.
