The United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) announced its Division II Men’s Basketball All-Americans on March 2, 2019, at the USCAA Basketball National Tournament Banquet in Uniontown, PA. The Berkeley College Men’s Basketball team was represented by student-athletes Ricardo Ayuso, a senior, and Deylon Bovell, a junior, both of whom are earning degrees in Business Administration. Mr. Ayuso was selected as the USCAA Player of the Year and a First Team All-American. Mr. Bovell earned Honorable Mention recognition.

The Berkeley College Men’s Basketball team, which won the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship for five consecutive years, will face Penn State York in the USCAA quarterfinals on March 4, 2019, at 8 p.m.

“I’m extremely gratified for Ricardo, because I know how hard he worked not only this season, but throughout his tenure as a member of this program,” said Jonathan Pena, Head Coach, Berkeley College Men’s Basketball team. “Not only is he a tremendously versatile player for us on both sides of the court, but he also has a knack for coming up big when the moments are the grandest … As for Deylon, he was a key contributor in helping us accomplish some of our primary goals this past season, and we are looking forward to seeing him compete for the first time on the national stage.”

Mr. Ayuso, a resident of Brooklyn and a graduate of Redemption Christian Academy, earned USCAA Player of the Year and First Team All-American status thanks to his vital contributions to the Berkeley College Men’s Basketball team this season. He started and played in 21 of the team’s 25 games, averaging a team-best 16.3 points per evening, while also leading the Knights in steals per game with two. His 59 three-point baskets led Berkeley, and the senior scored in double figures 18 times, while also netting 20 points or more on five different occasions. He currently has 1,026 points as a Knight, and he also was tabbed as an HVIAC All-Conference player.

Mr. Bovell, a resident of Brooklyn and a graduate of Transit Tech CTE High School, started in 20 of the Knights’ 25 games this season, averaging 14.3 points per game, which was good for second highest. His 5.9 rebounds per evening led Berkeley College, and his 1.6 steals per game were tied with Anthony Hemingway for second most on the squad.

When they face off this evening, the Knights will come into the contest averaging 93 points per game, compared to 77 for Penn State York. The Nittany Lions, however, take care of the basketball very well, committing just 13 miscues per evening. On the flip side, Berkeley has turned the ball over 19 times per evening. Both teams move the ball well also, with Berkeley averaging 17.1 assists per night compared to a solid 15.8 for Penn State York.
