Christopher Dobles of Clifton, NJ, Berkeley College Class of 2012, Interior Design, has received an award for the entry he submitted in a student competition sponsored by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (NJASID). Mr. Dobles received an award of $500 for the chair he designed and entered in the 2011 Samuel and Rhoda Chalfin Memorial Scholarship Competition for a seating product.
“It takes perseverance,” said Mr. Dobles. “I was able to do this because my professor set aside his own time to help. He drew out our creativity. That inspired me to make an effort and design this award-winning chair.”
Mr. Dobles anticipates graduating with his Associate’s degree next year. He seeks a career in the commercial design field, preferably working on large-scale projects. Before returning to college, Mr. Dobles had been in the welding business for 11 years.
Jason Lee, Faculty Liaison for the Berkeley College Student Chapter of NJASID, sets aside time each quarter to conduct special Student Workshops for students who wish to submit their work in competitions. Separate from the curriculum design work, here Berkeley College students receive personal encouragement and help to refine their ideas.
“The student puts in a lot of effort,” says Instructor Lee. “But also gains experience, publicity, and the privilege of citing the entry on his or her resume,”
The Berkeley College Interior Design program offers Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Interior Design, a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design Management, and beginning this fall, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design.
A leader in business education for 80 years, Berkeley College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and enrolls nearly 9,000 students — including more than 800 international students — in its Baccalaureate and Associate degree programs. The College has four New Jersey locations — Woodland Park, Paramus, Woodbridge, and Newark. And in New York there are four locations — Midtown Manhattan, Lower Manhattan in the Wall Street area, Brooklyn, and White Plains. Berkeley College Online also offers full degree programs.
