Berkeley College in New York is pleased to be placed on the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The President’s Honor Roll recognizes higher education institutions whose community service efforts achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities. This distinction is the highest federal recognition that colleges and universities can receive for community service, service-learning, and civic engagement.

Berkeley College is proud to be recognized among these institutions at the national level for our commitment to civic engagement and community service,” said Dario A. Cortes, PhD, President, Berkeley College. “The students, the communities and the college all benefit when students bring their expertise and their commitment to giving back into their local communities where they work and live.”

“Service and higher education go hand in hand,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “These schools are inspiring young leaders to roll up their sleeves and work alongside community members to solve problems. By recognizing the institutions who are leading the way to achieve meaningful, measurable results for the communities they serve, we also highlight the vital role all colleges and universities play in addressing community challenges and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement.”

Berkeley Cares, a community outreach program led by the Berkeley College Office of Student Development and Campus Life was developed in 2009 to provide an umbrella identity for the various community service activities undertaken by associates and students. Berkeley Cares builds on the longstanding tradition and commitment of Berkeley College to address important social issues, working with charities in the critical areas of food, shelter, health and student success. Through this program, students, faculty and staff perform hands-on community service events in their local neighborhoods.

On Community Service Day in New York, for example, Berkeley College volunteers had 17 opportunities to serve in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Westchester and Rockland counties. Some of the volunteer services included working with the Food Bank for New York City by reorganizing goods and food for redistribution; sorting and shelving books at three branches of the New York Public Library; hosting breakfast and planting flowers at Gilda’s Club; and assisting with a school visit at the White Plains Public Library.
