Berkeley College celebrated the induction of its fifth cohort of students into the New York and New Jersey chapters of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) during a ceremony held at The Venetian in Garfield, NJ, on August 15, 2018. Students are selected for membership to the NSLS, the nation’s largest leadership honor society, by their colleges based on either academic standing or leadership potential.

In his remarks to the inductees, Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College, said, “The mission of the National Society of Leadership and Success is not so different from that of Berkeley College. Like Berkeley, NSLS wants to help you achieve your goals and, by empowering you, seeks to create a force of good in the community. You are here because you are leaders, and I cannot wait to see the many ways you will make a difference.”

During the ceremony, 98 students were inducted into the New York chapter, while another 77 students were inducted into the New Jersey chapter. Previously inducted members from both the New York and the New Jersey chapters, were also recognized for receiving National Engaged Leadership Awards from the NSLS. This award is given to members who have attended further events and training, as well as completed at least five hours of community service.

The evening also recognized three members of the Berkeley College community who have made significant contributions to the success of Berkeley College students. Brian Cronin, Director of Buildings and Grounds, received Honorary Membership in NSLS; Professor Patricia Cowan, English, School of Liberal Arts, received the Excellence in Teaching award; and Michele Figueroa, Career Counselor, Career Services, received the Excellence in Service to Students award.

Candidacy to the NSLS is a nationally recognized achievement of honorable distinction. The organization hosts live-streamed speaker events, allowing members to hear from and interact with national leaders, celebrities and best-selling authors such as Arianna Huffington, Carly Fiorina and Rudy Giuliani.
