On October 29, 2018, Berkeley College honored New Jersey’s most philanthropic companies as the premier sponsor of the fifth annual New Jersey Monthly Great Oak Awards. The ceremony was held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, NJ.

Corporate honorees included Atlantic Stewardship Bank, Marketsmith, Inc., The Provident Bank Foundation and The Provident Bank.

Philanthropist, humanitarian, and Newark native Ray Chambers received the inaugural Catalyst Award. Mr. Chambers, the founder of a private equity firm, has used his wealth for philanthropy at home and abroad, focusing on the support of at-risk youth, the revitalization of the City of Newark, and global health crises. His initiative Malaria No More is credited with bringing more than one billion mosquito nets to sub-Saharan Africa, thereby saving the lives of seven million people.

Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College, introduced Mr. Chambers. “Ray is Jersey all the way. While his commitment reaches around the world, it is deeply felt in this, his hometown,” President Smith said. “Whether in Newark or Africa or points in between and beyond, Ray Chambers has truly been a catalyst for positive change.”

Students from the Berkeley College campus in Newark served as event volunteers, assisting with registration and logistics.
