Berkeley College honored Nancy Robles-Guess of Totowa, NJ, with the 2017 Alumni of the Year award during its Commencement ceremony on May 5, 2017, at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. The award is presented annually to a Berkeley College graduate who has enjoyed professional success and fulfillment through community service.

At the age of 7, Ms. Robles-Guess moved with her mother from Costa Rica to Paterson, NJ. Struggling with poverty and an abusive relationship that left her discouraged and alone with three children, Ms. Robles-Guess discovered an opportunity to provide for her kids and change her life, by enrolling at Berkeley College.

“I met incredible professors who went out of their way to help me grow and develop a good understanding of my industry,” Ms. Robles-Guess said. “It was initially a tough transition because I was the first person in my family to go to college and I had no idea what to expect. In fact, I was the only sibling of three to graduate high school, so college seemed unattainable at one point.”

While still an undergraduate at Berkeley College, Ms. Robles-Guess received her professional start at Fleet Healthcare. She quickly rose up the career ladder and by 2005 joined Eastern Funding, LLC, a commercial lender to small- and medium-sized businesses nationwide. Today she is the Executive Vice President of Operations and Compliance Officer at Eastern Funding, the 36th-largest bank-owned leasing and financing company in the nation.

In addition to her responsibilities as Executive Vice President, Ms. Robles-Guess also oversees Eastern Funding’s community outreach committee, which arranges volunteer initiatives that give back to organizations in New York and New Jersey. She also partners with Seeds To Flowers, Inc., a non- profit organization that empowers girls in the low income communities of Brooklyn, NY, by helping them to advance in leadership, personal development and education. Ms. Robles-Guess regularly runs in charity races and marathons as well, raising funds and awareness for organizations such as the American Cancer Society, and Autism Speaks.

Ms. Robles-Guess holds an AAS in Paralegal Studies and a BS in Business Administration – Management from Berkeley College, and an MBA from the University of Phoenix, where she is currently enrolled in a doctoral program. She serves on the Berkeley College Alumni Board, as well as the Berkeley College Advisory board, and regularly shares her story of success and determination with Berkeley College students and alumni as a guest speaker at events.

Ms. Robles-Guess currently resides in Totowa, NJ, with her five children and husband. Ms. Robles-Guess’ two daughters attend local colleges; her oldest son is a senior at Passaic Valley High School and plans to join the U.S. Army; and her two younger sons are in second grade and pre-school.
