Berkeley College is exhibiting the artwork of Antoinette Wysocki at its New York City Midtown Campus Gallery, First Floor Lobby, 3 East 43rd Street. This exhibit will be on display from May 3 through 28. It is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and on Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. An artist’s reception will be held on Wednesday, May 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
Currently residing in New York City, Ms. Wysocki is an expressionistic painter who employs mixed media on organic materials. Since 1998, she has removed herself from the confines of stretched canvas and turned her attention to working on paper. The artist says this allows her to play with absorption rates, and that its characteristic malleable quality retains the immediacy of drawing – the touchstone for her paintings.
Of her work, Ms. Wysocki says painting is “a process of combining various methods by use of materials, manipulations, chance, control, and analysis to get the finished product. The work starts with gestures, moves to washes, and then to controlled brush strokes with detail. When it reaches a comfortable finished point, it is time to indulge in the materials.”
The artist received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute and has shown widely in galleries in New York, San Francisco, Sacramento, Seattle, New Mexico, and Washington D. C. In 2007, she was nominated for best emerging artist by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) in New York City and was awarded an artist’s grant for a program through the Santa Fe Art Institute. She is a member of the Washington Project for the Arts/Corcoran and a founding member of Artdc.org, an artists’ collective in Washington, DC. She was an artist-in-residence with inner-city schools in San Francisco, and assisted in public art pieces with the San Francisco Art Education project. Ms. Wysocki is now preparing for an extensive exhibit of her work in China.
