Berkeley College Exhibits Paintings

by Artist Del Viarengo -

‘Italian Memories – Landscapes of Tuscany

Berkeley College is exhibiting the artwork of artist Del Viarengo at its New York City Midtown Campus Gallery, First Floor Lobby, 3 East 43rd Street. This exhibit will be on display from May 5 through 29.  It is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and on Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  An artist’s reception will be held on Wednesday, May 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

Ms. Viarengo was born in Chick Springs, SC, and moved to New York, NY, in her teens.  In the 1950s, she received a scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology where she found the New York art scene inspirational.  It led her to studying art history and painting at the Parsons School of Art and Design from where she graduated in 1995.

The group of paintings – oils, acrylic, and collage - in the Berkeley College exhibit entitled, “Italian Memories – Landscapes of Tuscany,” is part of a larger body of work done over the last two years.  Ms. Viarengo says, “The paintings are based on memories of times spent in the Italian countryside and a cache of letters sent between two Italian immigrants who met and fell in love in New York City in 1927.  The letters continue through the 1940s and bear witness to a tumultuous relationship ranging from love, promise, and hope, through loss, disillusionment, and eventually, redemption.”

The artist says she draws inspiration from Goya, Caravaggio, Monet, Anselm Kiefer, Mark Rothko, and Wolf Kahn.  She has taken workshops with Wolf Kahn and Philip Pearlstein at the National Academy of Design and attended the Art Students’ League.  Group shows include Cousen Rose Gallery in Martha’s Vineyard; Artspace in Greenfield, and MASSART shows at Greenfield Community College – all in MA.
