BERKELEY COLLEGE DEAN TO SPEAK ON EMERGING TRENDS IN EDUCATION
AT CITY & STATE ON EDUCATION FORUM
Marianne Vakalis, EdD, Berkeley College Dean of Strategic Initiatives, will address the future of higher education and the ways technology can improve student outcomes at the City & State On Education forum on August 17, 2016.
Dr. Vakalis will be joined by education professionals who will tackle topics such as state testing, parental and student rights, and the STEM curriculum in New York City schools. Carmen Farina, New York City Schools Chancellor, will deliver the keynote address.
Other panelists on the “Emerging Trends in Education” panel include Monica Disare, Education Reporter, Chalkbeat NY; Josh Wallack, Deputy Chancellor, New York City Department of Education; Daniel Dromm, Council Member and Chair of Committee on Education; Cynthia Getz, New York City Account Team Senior Manager, Custom Computer Specialists, Inc.; and Vlada Lotkina, Co-Founder and CEO, Classtag.com.
Dr. Vakalis provides leadership and guidance for strategic initiatives at Berkeley College, such as the Middle States Commission on Higher Education Self-Study and the College’s transition from quarters to a semester-based system.
In her previous position as Provost, Dr. Vakalis advanced the scope of student-focused programs at Berkeley College, which included development of the Academic Support Center, the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and the Honors Program for high-achieving students. She also guided the successful implementation of pre-college programs, worked to develop articulation agreements with local county colleges, and secured approval for the College’s first graduate degree, an MBA in Management.
A former computer science faculty member and Fulbright Exchange Professor, Dr. Vakalis has presented on the value of technology and distance learning. Under her leadership, Berkeley College Online® was awarded United States Distance Learning Association/Quality Standards certification – the first program in New York and New Jersey to achieve this status.
