Berkeley College faculty, staff, alumni and students recently contributed 1,800 hands-on volunteer hours to 50 organizations in New Jersey and New York during the College’s annual Community Service Week. Now in its ninth year, the volunteer initiative aligns with the mission and values of Berkeley College, exemplifying that teaching and learning take place both in and out of the classroom.

From May 20 through 25, 2018, nearly 500 Berkeley College volunteers traveled to eight counties in New Jersey (Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic and Union) and four boroughs in New York (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens), as well as in Rockland and Westchester counties. Volunteers painted benches and beautified parks, served lunch to those in need at shelters and food kitchens, and connected with youth at Boys and Girls clubs. Volunteers also placed American flags at the graves of fallen servicemembers ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

“Through Community Service Week, faculty, staff, alumni and students share their time and talents with local organizations, serving as ambassadors of Berkeley College’s longtime commitment to social responsibility,” said Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College.

Community Service Week is an initiative of Berkeley Cares, which throughout the year assists charities in the critical areas of food, shelter, health and student success.
