Berkeley College faculty, staff, alumni and students recently contributed 1,800 hands-on volunteer hours to 50 organizations in New York and New Jersey during the College’s annual Community Service Week. Now in its ninth year, the volunteer initiative aligns with the mission and values of Berkeley College, exemplifying that teaching and learning take place both in and out of the classroom.
From May 20 through 25, 2018, nearly 500 Berkeley College volunteers painted benches and beautified parks, served lunch to those in need at shelters and food kitchens, and connected with youth, seniors, and the homebound. In Paterson, NJ, volunteers prepared food for those in need at Humble Beginnings; bagged groceries at CUMAC, an organization that works to alleviate hunger; and served patrons at Eva’s Village. In Clifton, NJ, volunteers worked outdoors at Morris Canal Park with the Clifton Recreation Department, painted rooms at the Boys and Girls Club of Clifton, and placed American flags at the graves of fallen servicemembers at East Ridgelawn Cemetery. In Woodland Park, NJ, volunteers created blankets for the Project Linus initiative and cleaned debris and painted fences at Frank Zaccaria Park. Other volunteers set up a field day for young club members at the Boys and Girls Club of Northwest New Jersey in Wayne, NJ.
“Through Community Service Week, faculty, staff, alumni and students share their time and talents with local organizations, serving as ambassadors of Berkeley College’s longtime commitment to social responsibility,” said Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College.
Community Service Week is an initiative of Berkeley Cares, which throughout the year assists charities in the critical areas of food, shelter, health and student success.
