Berkeley College faculty, staff, alumni and students recently contributed 1,800 hands-on volunteer hours to 50 organizations in New York and New Jersey during the College’s annual Community Service Week. Now in its ninth year, the volunteer initiative aligns with the mission and values of Berkeley College, exemplifying that teaching and learning take place both in and out of the classroom.

From May 20 through 25, 2018, nearly 500 Berkeley College volunteers painted benches and beautified parks, served lunch to those in need at shelters and food kitchens, and connected with youth, seniors, and the homebound.

In Middlesex and Monmouth counties, Berkeley College volunteers assisted with activities in the kitchen and dining room at Elijah’s Promise in New Brunswick; cleaned and washed agency vans for the New Jersey Institute for Disabilities in Iselin and Piscataway; sorted and packed books at the Bridge of Books Foundation in Holmdel; painted and prepared the grounds at the Middlesex County Recreation Council’s Kiddie Keep Well Camp for a senior citizen camping event.

“Through Community Service Week, faculty, staff, alumni and students share their time and talents with local organizations, serving as ambassadors of Berkeley College’s longtime commitment to social responsibility,” said Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College.

“The volunteers who came to our site were great and really helped us get a lot of books ready to send out to kids who need them in the coming weeks,” said Abigail Daly, Founder and Executive Director, Bridge of Books Foundation. “We sincerely hope that we can continue to be a part of this event in the coming years.”
