The Berkeley College Newark Campus recently celebrated its fifth anniversary at 536 Broad Street in Downtown Newark. The celebration was held in conjunction with the 80th anniversary of Berkeley College. Students, alumni, faculty, staff, business associates and civic leaders came together to acknowledge the contributions in higher education and the economic revitalization that the College has brought to Newark and the greater community.

“I am delighted that Berkeley acquired, invested and renovated here in Newark, the oldest city in the country after Philadelphia and New York,” said Sheila Y. Oliver, Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly. “When we have a long-term provider like Berkeley College in this area of New Jersey, we know there are scores of New Jersey citizens who would not have been able to be where they are without a school like Berkeley.”

The event also featured remarks by Dario A. Cortes, PhD, President of Berkeley College; Jo Ann Marianne, Berkeley College Class of 1983 and Chief Operating Officer at the Ironbound Community Corporation; Christopher Thomas, Berkeley College New Jersey Student of the Year; Kevin L. Luing, Berkeley College Board Chairman; and Stan Holland, Berkeley College Campus Operating Officer, Newark Campus.

The event also included the unveiling of a permanent Berkeley College Legacy Timeline Exhibit on the first floor of the Newark Campus. The nine wall-mounted panels – one for each decade since the 1930s – parallel the history of Berkeley College with what was happening globally.

In 1976, Berkeley College moved from the Spanish villa replica building at the corner of William and Prospect streets in East Orange, NJ, to a larger campus in West Paterson, NJ. Its leadership looked to serve the Essex County region with a well-trained, career-focused workforce. That opportunity came when the property at 534-536 Broad Street in Downtown Newark was identified in 2005. With reconstruction of this abandoned property (once the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics ... where Frank Sinatra was a student) converted into classrooms, a library, offices, a student lounge and a bookstore.

The first students enrolled in the fall of 2006. In 2008, the Berkeley College Newark Campus received the 2008 New Good Neighbor Award from the New Jersey Business and Industry Association. Today, the Newark Campus community is proud of its more than 150 graduates and 650 students. The facilities have expanded to make room for a larger library, student lounge, and Academic Support Center; conference and meeting rooms; more classrooms and faculty offices; and a larger bookstore.

A leader in business education for 80 years, Berkeley College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and enrolls nearly 9,000 students — including more than 800 international students — in its Baccalaureate and Associate degree programs. The College has four New Jersey locations — Woodland Park, Paramus, Woodbridge, and Newark. And in New York there are four locations — Midtown Manhattan, Lower Manhattan in the Wall Street area, Brooklyn, and White Plains. Berkeley College Online also offers full degree programs. Programs are offered in more than 20 career fields. The website address is
