BERKELEY COLLEGE CAREER FAIR CREATES
Beresford Heru Milford is just beginning his career as a Berkeley College student, but the resident of Jamaica, Queens, is already on the job hunt.
Mr. Milford was one of more than 50 students and alumni looking to connect with employers at a Career Fair at Berkeley College in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday evening.
“It’s very important that Berkeley College has employers here for the simple fact that everyone wants to graduate and work in their field,” said Mr. Milford, who is pursuing a degree in Financial Services. He added that he was interested in meeting representatives from companies such as People’s United Bank and New York Life Insurance Company, and said he plans to work full time while attending school if he lands a position.
Manny Maisonet, a Senior Financial Services Associate with People’s United Bank, said he was impressed with the caliber of candidates at the Career Fair.
“The applicants have a lot more experience than I was expecting,” he said. “They are asking specific questions about the positions and how they can get their foot in the door.”
Alana Sierra, a Fashion Merchandising and Management student who will complete her studies in six months, was on the search for a position in fashion marketing. Her resume details her experience at Jonden, a small company in New York City’s Garment District.
The Rockville Centre resident landed the position through Berkeley College, after her internship with the company became a full-time job.
“I’m learning so much being right in there with the buyers,” she said of her current position, adding that she was looking to expand her professional horizons with companies like BMG International, a marketing, sales and promotions company, and Talbot’s, a women’s apparel chain that was seeking visual merchandisers.
Before the Career Fair, Ike Iregbulem, a Business Developer with the Career Services department at Berkeley College, gave students tips about how to navigate the event and approach employers. He also acknowledged that it is a challenging time to be in the job market.
“Understand that the job search process is a full time job in itself,” Mr. Iregbulem told the students. “Try to do something every day to get yourself out there.”
He suggested that students use volunteerism to grow their resumes, a concept that Timothy Zawrotny, a general manager at Talbot’s, encouraged.
“We are looking for positive people and also people who give back to community,” he said, adding that the company promotes initiatives like Dress for Success, which provides professional attire to those in need.
By the end of the Career Fair, Mr. Milford, the Financial Services student, had scheduled follow-up meetings with three potential employers. He said he was confident about his job prospects.
“I’m looking forward to following up and seeing where things go,” he said.
How to Navigate a Career Fair
Map a Strategy. Know which employers will be there and who you would like to approach first. Have plenty of resumes on hand.
Practice Your Elevator Pitch. Prepare a 30-second highlight reel that tells who you are. Then practice, practice, practice.
Have Answers Ready. Employers may ask, “What do you know about us?” and “Why do you want to work for us?”
Don’t Limit Yourself. Look at the opportunities at each company, regardless of its area of focus. For example, most companies offer positions in marketing.
Dress for Success. First impressions are important. Wear business attire and look your best.
Follow Up. Within 24 hours, follow up with the employer via email.
