– Westchester County Executive George Latimer to Address Officials and Students from China

WHEN/WHERE:

January 10, 2018; 5 p.m.; Berkeley College, 99 Church Street, White Plains, NY

WHAT: Berkeley College will announce a Global Education Collaboration with Guizhou University of Finance and Economics (GUFE) in China and Westchester Community College. Westchester County Executive George Latimer will welcome the delegation of GUFE officials from China and 68 students who will be in their first day on the campus.

As part of a multi-year partnership with GUFE in China, 67 students from the university are residing in White Plains, NY, this semester to earn part or all of their Bachelor’s degrees through studying at Berkeley College. Westchester Community College will offer English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to students from China who require ESL instruction.

Song Zhao, Vice President of GUFE and Party Secretary at GUFE, assigned by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, is part of a six-member delegation from China visiting Berkeley College and Westchester Community College. He will discuss the benefits of the educational collaboration between GUFE and Berkeley College and the ESL component with Westchester Community College. He will share his first impressions of White Plains and the greater community of Westchester County. Mr. Zhao received special permission to visit the United States for a limited time.

Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College, and Belinda S. Miles, EdD, President of Westchester Community College, will greet students during the ceremony and discuss the impact of this collaboration and the importance of global education.

The Global Collaborative established by Berkeley College is a result of several years of negotiations with GUFE, led by the College’s vision to fulfill the need for globally prepared workforce. This initiative also positively impacts the economic landscape and workforce preparedness in the greater Westchester region and White Plains, NY.

The delegation from GUFE began their visit with a tour of Berkeley College in Midtown Manhattan on Monday, January 8th. On Tuesday, January 9th, they visited the Westchester Community College Campus. The group returns to China on Thursday, January 11th.
